Why I don't take anti-anxiety medications

I've read an article earlier today titled 'Are we over-diagnosing mental illness' on CNN.com. I found this article interesting because in the beginning phase of my anxiety when I'm trying to figure out whether there's something physically wrong with me, most of the  doctors asked me to try medications. Even though they're not psychiatrists, they all tried to prescribe me anti-anxiety meds. I'm not saying that's not right, but at the same time, I'm surprised by this culture of 'get well' quick approach.

My anxiety symptoms – current and past

As some of you might know, I've had three episodes of anxiety in my life, each characterized by different symptoms.  The current episode is the longest, started in mid-2012, even though I’m started to feel better as I gained more confidence with myself. What was really frustrating is that between my first and second episode, there was a gap of about 12 years when I thought I had completely conquered my anxiety disorder.

Probiotic for your digestive health

Partly due to anxiety disorder, I've a long history with frequent bowel movements. Most of my life I’m a regular user of products such as Pepto-Bismol or Immodium.

Then I had my gall bladder removed within the last few years and my body became sensitive to grease and I had to be careful of the kind of food that I eat or I’ll start having the runs. Early last year I learned from online articles that talked about the benefits of probiotics. Long before that I've regularly consumed yogurt because of the beneficial bacteria that it contains, but I didn't notice any digestive health improvement. I've learned about the brand called Culturelle, that it contained the probiotic Lactobacillus GG, which the company claim is the most clinically researched and proven probiotic strain.

The benefits of probiotic:

Thanks for participating in ‘What do you want out of an anxiety blog’ poll

As you can see from the poll results, the highest vote goes to ‘Learn ways to cope’ while majority votes went to both ‘Understand if symptoms are shared by others’ as well as ‘Understand if symptoms falls within the normal range of symptoms’.  A substantial number of votes also went to ‘Find support through online discussion’.

How to support a person afflicted with anxiety disorder

Having to live and interact with a person with anxiety disorder can sometimes be frustrating and stressful. I know because ever time after I've conquered my anxiety episodes (twice), I often look back and can’t believe all the things I did during those episodes – going to the ER thinking I have a heart attack or is about to die, racing thoughts, almost constant worrying, laser-sharp focus and sensitivity to every little bodily discomfort or symptoms.

Meditation

There’s a lot of talk of practicing meditation to cope with anxiety, such as Mindfulness meditation or Compassion Meditation. I will not go into how to practice them since I’m not an expert and  it would easier for you to read and view the links and videos that I have posted below this post.

My psychologist taught me to practice mindfulness meditation with encouraging thoughts such as ‘I’m calm and relaxed’ repeating in my head. But most of the time I like to practice the meditation that I've found on Youtube video posted below ‘How to Meditate II – Sitting Meditation’, where I simply think of the word ‘rising’ when I inhale and ‘falling’ as I exhale to follow the rhythm of my lower stomach. I like it because it clears my mind of any anxious and negative thoughts.
